Coastal Hazards Research Colloquium

Department of Homeland Security, Center of Excellence - Natural Disasters, Coastal Infrastructure and Emergency Management

The Center of Excellence - Natural Disasters, Coastal Infrastructure and Emergency Management (DIEM) hosted a 1 1/2 day colloquia to identify gaps in our understanding of coastal hazards phenomenology and develop a research agenda to guide future research efforts and investments in these areas. National experts in hazards research and practice were invited to participate. Trained facilitators and subject matter experts tasked participants with developing and refining a research agenda that builds on research topics previously described in the Grand Challenges for Disaster Reduction (National Science and Technology Council 2008) and Hurricane Warning: The Critical Need for a National Hurricane Research Initiative (National Science Foundation, National Science Board 2007).

Prior to their arrival at the colloquia, invited participants were provided with copies of Grand Challenges and other relevant materials. Led by topical specialists, invitees spent the first day of the workshop framing issues and laying the foundation to further define and review current problems. Gaps in research were identified in small breakout groups and new research questions were identified. The list of research questions will form the basis of published proceedings that describe the process, research problems, and resources needed to address them.

The coastal hazards phenomenology colloquium is the first in a series of events that successively build on one another, culminating in an all-natural hazards multidisciplinary research agenda setting meeting involving scholars in the fields of engineering, planning, the social and behavioral sciences and hazard modeling.

Other hazards will be addressed at a later date, including earthquakes, wildfire and slow onset, potentially catastrophic events such as climate change and drought.

The colloquia’s agenda can be viewed here (click here to download the agenda). The colloquia proceedings will be posted on the DIEM website once completed.
