The Center for the Study of Natural Hazards and Disasters (Hazards Center), headquartered at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, conducts innovative research on natural hazards and translates the knowledge developed to practice. The Hazards Center is the research lead of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Coastal Hazards Center of Excellence (CHC). In coordination with the education lead, based at Jackson State University, CHC performs research and develops education programs to enhance the Nation’s ability to safeguard populations, properties, and economies from natural disasters.
Coastal Hazards Center of Excellence Seeks Summer Interns
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Coastal Hazards Center of Excellence is seeking interested undergraduate and graduate students to participate in a 10-week internship program during the Summer of 2012.
Interns will work on research projects in Coastal Hazards Modeling, Engineering, Land Use Planning/Hazard Mitigation, and/or Social Science on the campus of the supervising faculty member.
Eligibility: Students must be enrolled in one of the following institutions:
- Alcorn State University
- Jackson State University
- Johnson C. Smith University
- Louisiana State University
- Tougaloo College
- Tulane University
- University of Houston
Support will include travel costs to and from the internship location and a $500 per week stipend.
